DRUMMOND ISLAND TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WZMQ) – A young teen died after a boating incident off Drummond Island Tuesday evening.
The Chippewa County Sheriff’s Department says around 8:30 p.m., deputies were dispatched for a boating incident and water rescue at a location between Drummond Island and Howard Island. A 14-year-old boy fell from a boat, was run over, and became tangled in the propeller.
Deputies say the operator of the boat quickly shut off the motor and jumped into the water to help. She was able to flag down a fisherman passing by for assistance. The two were able to get the boy out of the water and take him to Drummond Island where he was taken by Drummond Island EMS.
The boy was pronounced dead at the scene.
The sheriff’s department is calling the incident an accident.
The Chippewa County Sheriff’s Department was assisted by Drummond Island Fire and Rescue, Central Dispatch, and Chippewa County Victim Services Unit.
The incident remains under investigation.
