IRON MOUNTAIN, Mich. (WZMQ) – Iron Mountain City Park buzzed with excitement as Ed Mattson, the city’s retiring Director of Police and Fire Services, was celebrated for his service. After 32 years of dedication, Mattson looked forward to embracing his new role as a retiree and full-time grandpa, eager to spend quality time with his family.
In a heartfelt address, Mattson expressed his gratitude to the Iron Mountain community, acknowledging the memorable journey of his career. “I’d like to thank the people of Iron Mountain. It’s been a fun 32 years,” he said, assuring everyone that he would remain a familiar face around town.
Jeff Solka is set to take over as the new director, having been with the department for many years. Mattson spoke highly of the transition, saying, “Jeff is the director as of tomorrow, and he will be taking over. He’s been around a significant amount of years. We’ve got a really good group of guys that we’ve hired.”
The Iron Mountain Police Department is also preparing to welcome a new officer from NMU’s Police Academy this August. Reflecting on his retirement plans, Mattson shared, “I’m just planning on not doing a whole lot. Being a full-time grandpa and working at my daughter’s child care center as head of maintenance.”
As the community bid farewell to a beloved leader, Mattson’s legacy and commitment to Iron Mountain were celebrated, leaving behind a department ready for a bright future under new leadership.
