Iron Mountain 4th of July Parade Raises $6,372 in Fill the Boot fundraiser

IRON MOUNTAIN, Mich. (WZMQ) – Iron Mountain’s annual 4th of July parade saw a remarkable turnout this year, highlighted by a successful “Fill the Boot” fundraiser led by the Iron Mountain Fire Department. The effort, supported by the Sons of the American Legion, raised an impressive $6,372.

The parade kicked off with Phillip Spooner proudly carrying the American flag, leading a procession that included members of Legion Post 50’s color guard and rifle guard. Around eight to nine legion members rode on a float, joyfully tossing candy to excited children lining the streets.

Robert Massicotte, Post Adjutant of Legion Post 50, noted a heartwarming trend during the parade. For the past 6 years, as he has pulled the float, he has observed a significant increase in the number of spectators standing and removing their hats in respect as the American flag passes by. This year, even more children were seen saluting the flag, a testament to growing patriotism in the community.

Following the parade, a festive picnic was held at the legion, attracting about 125 attendees. Kids enjoyed free ice cream and hot dogs, while the Sons of the American Legion cooked all the food. The auxiliary played a crucial role by organizing a 50/50 raffle, with proceeds benefiting the American Legion. The combined efforts of the auxiliary and the Sons of the American Legion made the picnic a memorable event for all.

The Iron Mountain Fire Department’s “Fill the Boot” campaign, conducted during the parade, was a standout success. Firefighters carried boots and collected donations from the generous crowd, all in support of the Sons of the American Legion’s initiative to fundraise for Iron Mountain’s annual firework display.

Overall, the Iron Mountain 4th of July parade was a resounding success, showcasing community spirit, patriotism, and a collective effort to support local veteran organizations and the city of Iron Mountain’s firework display.
