Vets remind pet owners to watch for heat exhaustion in dogs during warm weather

MARQUETTE, Mich, (WZMQ) – Bayshore Veterinary Hospital has a few reminders to keep your pets safe while out enjoying the heat.

Bayshore encourages people to walk their dogs earlier in the morning before it gets too hot, and watch out for places where a street or sidewalk may be very hot and could burn your pet’s paws.

Tim Hunt, a vet with Bayshore said common signs of heat exhaustion is uncontrollable panting with a wide open mouth, and sudden lethargy.

“Dogs can’t talk for themselves,” said Hunt. “They take a lot of trust from what we’re going to expose them too and put them in to, and often they’re going to be with you regardless of what’s happening, and often times they’re gonna overdo it. Where we can speak, the dogs can’t speak.”

Bayshore also recommends leaving your dogs at home while running errands, because leaving them in the car can be extremely dangerous in hot weather.
