Michigan State Police connects first responders to students with summer camp

MUNISING, Mich, (WZMQ) – Monday was the first day of the Michigan State Police’s (MSP) Camp 9-1-1 program.

Kids ages 13 to 19 are learning about the different types of law enforcement like state troopers, K9 units, DNR, and corrections, they even got to meet the Alger county prosecutor Robert Steinhoff.

Emma Sweeney, an MSP cadet involved in organizing the camp said it helps first responders and students build lasting connections.

“It’s mostly about building relationships,” said Sweeney. “Truthfully, bringing all these people in because we do want to educate them, but I think it’s important that they’re connected with their community members and all these professionals that are coming in.”

While the students were making lasting connection, they also seemed to be having a great time.

“They’re showing us how to clear a building out and like looking for people,” said Student Autumn Burley. “so I was really excited for that.”

“We’re looking at a crime scene and stuff like that,” said Student Eiza Lee. “And it’s pretty fun I would have to say.”

“I’m having a blast,” said Student Charlene McGee. “It’s fun.”

Today there were only eight students, but MSP Community Service Trooper Thomas Kinnunen said they plan to keep growing.

“This is the first year in several,” said Kinnunen. “So get these students talking to their friends to create interest in awareness.”

And Burley said she’s already planning to spread awareness about the camp in her own home.

“I’d probably recommend this for my sister,” said Burley. “You need as many people as you can get for this kind of stuff.”

The camp continues Tuesday and Wednesday with visits from the National Guard, and MSP’s Aviation Unit.

Polling locations in Marquette officially closed at 8 pm, but if you were in line by then, you could still vote. "The polls, even though they closed at eight, we allowed those folks that were in line to vote. So it did finally finish up at about 20 after eight or so," said Talsma.
