MUNISING, Mich. – On the evening of Wednesday, May 29th, recovery efforts were completed near the Coves Campground for the body of a 45-year-old male. United States Park Rangers at Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore received a call that the individual had fallen unconscious after exhibiting signs of distress while hiking towards Spray Falls. Alger County Sheriff’s Office deployed a marine response vessel to the area while additional personnel responded on foot. The individual, identified as Steven Poppema of Holland, Michigan, was pronounced dead at the scene.
“We extend our sincere condolences to the family of Steven Poppema,” said Park Superintendent David Horne, “and we thank our agency partners for their assistance in responding to this incident.”
