MARQUETTE, Mich, (WZMQ) – This morning, Veterans and their families from American Legion Post 44 placed flags around Harlow Park in downtown Marquette.
The tradition began 15 years ago with only 10 flags honoring local veterans and their families, and has since grown to over 141 flags.
One legion member, Tom Ranta, said the growth of the tradition is thanks to the support and patriotism of the community.
“We’ve never forgot those people that gave their lives for our country,” said Ranta. “And I think the community, they love that support, they like to see it here, we’re very patriotic here. This county is excellent in supporting that, so we want to keep that patriotic feeling going within this community.”
The American Legion Post 44 will also have the flags out for the Fourth of July, Flag Day, Veterans Day, and September 11.
