ISHPEMING, Mich, (WZMQ) – Ishpeming city officials have closed off a section of second street while they repair a collapsed storm pipe underneath the road.
Several residents alerted city officials to a hole in the road where pavement had fallen into the collapsed pipe.
The public works department replaced the collapsed area with a temporary pipe over the weekend, and have closed down the Second St. and High St. intersection.
Ishpeming City Manager Craig Cugini said the pipe was older and more susceptible to erosion.
“This is one of those construction areas where the pipe was made out of brick and mortar,” said Cugini. “Everybody knows that mortar over time will erode, water will seep through. The brick and mortar separated and caused some failure of that system”
The city hopes to have repairs completed and the road open by the end of the summer.
