Dickinson Conservation District launches summer native plant fundraiser

KINGSFORD, Mich. (WZMQ) – As the pollinators revive the harmonious buzz of the 2024 summer season, the Dickinson Conservation District unveiled its latest endeavor to nurture local biodiversity: the Summer Native Plant Fundraiser. Andrew Finkel, the district’s Development Coordinator, detailed how the colorful array of Michigan native plants were each carefully selected to thrive in the region’s climate by himself, the District Forester, and the Soil Conservationist.

“These are also Michigan natives that are going to help with the health of our communities and yards and other naturalized areas. Unlike the tree sale, these are going to be sold individually and in 1-quart pots.”

This year, the district opted for a separate sale, distinct from its traditional combined tree and native plant sale, to spotlight the importance of native plants. From the delicate Monkeyflower to the towering Sunflowers, to the sparkling fireweed, each species was chosen with meticulous consideration for its contribution to local ecology.

“These plants are available for purchase online, by phone, or right here at the Conservation District at 420 North Hooper Street,” Finkel announced. “The pickup day is going to be June 29th at the downtown Farmer’s market.”  Pick-up hours will run from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. CST on pick-up day.

The last day to order is June 21st.

To order, call: 906-774-1550 ext 106

Or visit: dickinsoncd.org/shop

Looking ahead, the Conservation District is planning another upcoming woodburning workshop to offer the community, however no dates are currently set.
