WELLS TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WZMQ) – Around 3:50 p.m. on Monday, April 29, troopers from the Michigan State Police (MSP) Gladstone Post responded to US-2/41 Hwy near E & K Auto Repair in Wells Township for a report of a crash involving two pickup trucks.
After further investigation, it was learned an ambulance from Rampart EMS was heading west on US-2/41 with its emergency lights and sirens activated when a Chevrolet Silverado driving at a high rate of speed attempted to pass the ambulance. The truck then struck a parked Dodge Ram on the shoulder of the roadway that was yielding for the emergency vehicle.
As a result of the crash, the driver of the Chevrolet Silverado, a 35-year-old male from Escanaba, was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver and passenger of the Dodge Ram sustained severe injuries and were transported to OSF St. Francis Hospital for treatment.
The investigation remains ongoing. MSP troopers say reckless driving and failure to yield for an emergency vehicle are factors in the crash.
Troopers were assisted on scene by Escanaba Public Safety Police and Fire, the Delta County Sheriff’s Office, Delta County Victim Service Unit, and Rampart EMS.
