ESCANABA, Mich. (WZMQ) – Local Boy and Girl Scouts celebrated Abor Day in Escanaba by planting three oak trees in Ludington Park.
As a member of Tree City USA, the City of Escanaba is required to have a public tree planting once a year. Public Works employees taught the scouts how to measure and dig a hole, then helped them plant the trees securely in the ground.
According to Red Buck District Scouts Commissioner Mark Rose, the tree planting helps scouts achieve merit badges for conservation and forestry. He says it also gets them actively involved in their community at a young age.
“Our scouting family, all of us all believe in service to the community, giving back,” said Rose. “This is a very obvious, physical way they can do that. These kids are our future, and we want to develop them into good citizens for our future to come.”
The scouts encourage anyone walking through Ludington Park to bring an extra water bottle to help the trees grow. The trees are located near the intersection of Bonifas Road and Loren W. Jenkins Memorial Drive.
