MARQUETTE, Mich. (WZMQ) – The temperatures are starting to warm up and the DNR is reminding everyone that more animal activity could be present. Deer are migrating back to the area, which can also mean that raccoons, squirrels, and other possibly disease-carrying animals could pose a threat to your animals’ safety.

DNR Biologists mentioned that these animals do populate trails and other wooded areas you might walk your dog in, and following what they call “nature etiquette” can keep you and your pet safe when exploring the UP.

“All wildlife has the potential to be dangerous so all of it should be treated with respect keep your distance. Have a bell on your dog have a bell on your person. Just so that way it kind of alerting wildlife ahead that somebodies coming and they’ll get out of the way you won’t ever see them even,” commented DNR Wildlife Biologist Brian Roell.

The DNR mentioned before taking your dogs on long walks, make sure their vaccinations are up to date.
