MARQUETTE, Mich. (WZMQ) – The Marquette County Sheriff’s Office has received numerous phone calls regarding scam complaints using official Sheriff Department phone numbers.
People have reported scam calls advising them they have a warrant for their arrest, they have failed to show for jury duty/court appointment, or they were directed to a certain website for more information. These calls are coming in as a valid telephone number and often names of current or retired officers are used.
The Sheriff’s Office says it will never request personal information from you over the telephone or direct you to any website. The department advises the public to use extreme caution in paying someone over the telephone, especially if you receive a call as mentioned.
If you ever doubt the legitimacy of someone you are talking with, even if the caller ID is correct, always look up the phone number independently and call that number to verify the personnel and request.
