KEWEENAW COUNTY, Mich. (WZMQ) – The Keweenaw Peninsula, nationally recognized for its vast wilderness and dark sky status, is bringing the community together to watch and learn about major celestial events.
The 2nd Keweenaw Dark Sky Festival is aimed at bringing awareness to light pollution, through a variety of speakers at next week’s event. People will be able to learn about the effects of light pollution on both humans and wildlife.
The Keweenaw Mountain Lodge commented that although the Keweenaw is secluded from a large amount of light, there are still small amounts of light making its way through.
“Even here I shot a photo the other day I had it pointed South from up here on the other end of the peninsula and I could see light pollution reflecting from low-level clouds from Marquette, and when I looked at Google Earth that was 70 miles away,” commented Outdoor Activity Lead Chris Guibert.
