Female Business Spotlight: Delta Hair Company

ESCANABA, Mich. (WZMQ) – In honor of Women’s History Month, WZMQ 19 is highlighting local female-owned businesses throughout March.

“I originally started doing hair with my mom when I was three,” said Christa Madgwick. “I started doing my friends’ hair in high school for proms, and I knew that I wanted to be a hairstylist.”

However, Madgwick originally followed another path.

“My other big passion is art, and I actually went to university for interior design,” she said. “I decided that hair was something I needed to go pursue, and that’s just kind of where it took off.”

Madgwick has now been working as a stylist for 17 years. She became the owner of Delta Hair Company—formerly The Ritz—at 1308 Ludington Street last April.

“We’re a full-service salon, so we do haircuts, colors, waxing, spray tans, weddings, pedicures, manicures,” said Madgwick.

She still utilizes her art background in her work at the salon.

“Hair is my medium,” she said. “It’s creating that style and that form, whether it be an updo or with color.”

Madgwick says Delta Hair Company aims to provide clients with their perfect look and a comfortable experience.

“It’s an environment that people can come in knowing that they’re going to leave happy and more confident, whether they get their hair done for an interview, for the prom, or for vacation,” she said.

Madgwick has a team of eight women working alongside her every day.

“These girls work very, very hard,” she said. “I feel very fortunate to be blessed with the team that I inherited, in a sense, and to only push them to be better businesswomen themselves.”

Madgwick has high hopes for every woman pursuing a career in hair—or any other passion.

“My vision is to create more of a world of empowering the stylists behind the chair, versus us as a salon,” Madgwick said. “Never stop educating yourself and growing, and never underestimate the power of your tribe.”

To book an appointment with a stylist at Delta Hair Company, call (906) 789-1467 or visit the salon’s Facebook page. Select services like waxing, spray tanning, and eyebrow tinting are available to book online at vagaro.com.
