MARQUETTE, Mich. (WZMQ) – On Wednesday, 13 high schoolers started their Marquette County Sheriff’s Youth Police Academy, a six-week long program.
The program will cover topics like evidence collection, defensive tactics, and an overview of working in law enforcement.
Marquette County Sheriff Greg Zyburt said there’s a growing need for more officers, and he hopes the program will help.
“Not only Marquette County but throughout the state of Michigan and throughout the nation, there is a need for police officers,” said Zyburt, “There is a shortage. Currently in the state of Michigan, we’re about 500 officers throughout the state. So, there is there is a real need, and that’s why we’re doing programs like this.”
