Some playful kittens at the Delta Animal Shelter

ESCANABA, Mich. (WZMQ) – An Escanaba shelter is encouraging animal lovers to open their hearts to a new furry friend this Valentine’s Day.

The Delta Animal Shelter is holding an adoption special on cats for Valentine’s week, now through Friday, February 16. All cats, including kittens and seniors, are half off of the regular adoption fee.

“We just figured not everybody wants to have a human valentine—I know I don’t—so why not come in and find your kitty valentine?” laughed Shelter Operations Coordinator Vonnie Bruce. “We’ve just been full of cats for so long, and we have some great cats that have been sitting a little bit longer, so we wanted to find a way to bring the community in. We’re kind of calling it, ‘You can’t buy love, but you can adopt it.'”

“Matchmakers” on staff will talk with guests about what type of cat might be the best fit for their household. Guests will then do some “speed dating,” meeting cats until they find the one for them.

“There’s a perfect human out there for every cat, so we’re hoping this special will bring people in,” Bruce said. “Maybe people that haven’t adopted from a shelter before but are curious about what it is, and who knows? They could come in just to look and leave with their perfect cat. That’s what we’re really hoping for, because we would love to just empty the whole place!”

The Delta Animal Shelter offers same-day adoptions, making it easy for humans to meet their feline valentine and take them home. To meet the cats available this week, visit the shelter at 6975 County 426 M.5 Road from 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Appointments are not required.

Visit the Delta Animal Shelter website or Facebook page to view all animals available for adoption.

On Saturday, February 17, the Gladstone Public Safety Department is hosting an event for dog lovers. The Delta County Doggie Dash is a 5k run/walk starting and ending at the Gladstone Beach House. Registration begins at 8:15 a.m., with the 5k kicking off at 9:00 a.m. Dogs are welcome to join the event.

The cost to participate in the Delta County Doggie Dash is a $15 or $10 with a donation of dog or cat food for the Delta Animal Shelter. Those not participating who would like to make a donation can mail money to or drop off food at GPSD 144 4th Ave North in Gladstone. Click here for more information.
