MARQUETTE, Mich. (WZMQ) – The DNR says it has experienced a very quiet and safe winter outdoor recreation season so far.
During tonight’s Western U.P. Citizen Advisory Council meeting a DNR officer reported minimal injuries and accidents on trails throughout the Western U.P. The DNR credits the lack of incidents to the mild temperatures and snowfall seen so far.
With temperatures warming to above freezing over the next week, officers warn that activities like skating and ice fishing could become dangerous.
“I think we are very lucky at this point to not have drownings in the U.P., because people venture out on every type of ice you can imagine, I have not heard of any incidents up here, so I think we have dodged a bullet right there,” said Sgt. Mark Leadmen, a DNR officer.
