MARQUETTE, Mich. (WZMQ) – The National Weather Service said that the wind chills reaching -10 and below across the UP is not unexpected. After a long stretch of warm weather, cold temperatures on Tuesday were reaching -4 with a wind chill of -24 in Marquette. Similar weather carried throughout the Great Lakes.
NWS says the cold winds have even traveled down to the Gulf Coast, and places like Texas and Alabama have even seen some snow. “It’s pretty widespread really large blast of cold air the first one of the winter season that made its way through the eastern half of the country but by the upcoming weekend into next week we return back to the pattern we’ve seen during the first half of the winter for December and January,” commented National Weather Service Meteorologist Matt Zika.
NWS noted that even though next week will see above-freezing temperatures, the packed snow will most likely stick around for the rest of the season.
