Marquette’s beautiful Maritime Museum is in need of our help. For two years the museum’s board has been working towards raising enough money to purchase the museum building a new roof.
Hilary Billman, the Director of the Marquette Maritime Museum, explained all that the museum has been doing to gather as much money as they can, with fundraiser, donations, and grants. So far they have raised 10,000 of the 155,000 that it will cost to replace the roof. The director also mentions the fundraiser’s they have planned for the 2024 season.
Currently their roof has not experience any major damage, however due to weather and old age the roof is on it’s last leg. The weather is the biggest threat against the roof. Especially sense the location is right on the water which makes the winds much stronger, the snow can puncture the roof at any point. As the director put it, it’s only a matter of time, “We’re really lucky right now that we don’t have any issues with the roof, and we’re just, it cu-could at any point now, um, especially cause where we’re located right on the lake. I mean with all the wind and everything, um, so nothing is happening right now and we’re hoping to get the new roof on before we have any issues”.
The museum plans on hopefully starting renovations on the roof around spring. There is not much of a period for them to work sense the museum’s season starts in may, and springs up here tend to start late. The Marquette Maritime Museum continues their battle with the wicked weather. In the chance they are unable to open due to roof renovations they still plan to make sure light house tours are still active.
