Grab & Go makes “food fast, not fast food”

ESCANABA, Mich. (WZMQ) – For many with resolutions to eat better in the new year, the convenience of fast food restaurants can be an obstacle. One Escanaba business owner is offering a healthier alternative.

“Growing up, my mom was diabetic most of her life, and so I learned what’s good for diabetics and what’s not good,” said Rick Micheau. “I was always real heavy as I kid.”

After trying different diets, Micheau finally found something that worked for him.

“I’ve been on keto diet for 14 years now,” he said. “I used to be 360 pounds and I’ve lost 160, and it’s just a lifestyle.”

With more than three decades of experience running a catering company, Micheau opened Grab & Go on Ludington Street two years ago.

“We have some vegan options, we have some vegetarian options, a lot of gluten-free things, our keto stuff—lots of options there,” he said. “We also do some dairy-free things and lots of sugar-free things for diabetics and such.”

Many turn to fast food as a quick way to fuel up during a busy day. Micheau sees Grab & Go as a healthier alternative.

“Our slogan is actually ‘Grab & Go: Food Fast, Not Fast Food,'” said Micheau. “It’s a quick-service deli and it’s not that unhealthy, processed stuff. This is all whole foods that we use and real fats. You can come in and have soup and sandwich and not feel guilty at all about what you ate.”

There are also plenty of choices for those who aren’t looking for any special diets or to cut out certain ingredients—just good food.

“Everything that we do here is homemade,” Micheau said. “We don’t buy box mixes or frozen products. We do it all from scratch, including all of our desserts, and we bake fresh-baked pasties every day.”

He invites anyone looking to make a positive change in their diet, or for a quick bite on the run, to stop by Grab & Go for a lunch break.

“Especially if people are toying with the idea of trying a different eating style, I encourage anybody to come in and try some things,” said Micheau. “You will not know that they’re low-carb or different ingredients.”

Grab & Go, located at 922 Ludington Street, is open Monday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. However, those hours will expand in the near future to include breakfast.
