Bay College to host MIOSHA construction course Jan. 16 – 17

ESCANABA, Mich. (WZMQ) – Bay College is once again working with MIOSHA to provide safety training for local workers.

Bay College has a long history of partnering with the state’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration to keep Delta County employees out of harm’s way on the job.

“We’ve been providing MIOSHA training for many years, but in 2007, we actually became a co-sponsor of the MIOSHA MTI programs,” said Renee Lundberg, Bay College Business Development and Workforce Training Manager. “Employees can receive the training, which would build into a certificate of completion through MIOSHA.”

The college has a full schedule of MIOSHA training courses this semester, with a ten-hour construction course planned for January 16 – 17.

“This is a great way to have your employees get their federal OSHA card, along with a MIOSHA card,” Lundberg explained. “The concentration will be on PPE, Right to Know, hazards for scaffolding, mobile lifts, anything that is going to be found on a construction site.”

MIOSHA courses are open to the public. Lundberg encourages anyone working in the construction industry to sign up for the January training.

“It’s very important to have a centralized place where employees can come and depend on safety training that is provided by those experts,” she said. “Employers, if they apply to MIOSHA, they can receive scholarships for up to 50% off each registration.”

With general industry and other MIOSHA trainings available in the coming months—along with the annual Upper Michigan Safety Conference in the spring—Lundberg says Bay College is committed to building up a stronger and safer local workforce.

“That is to supply that pipeline of talent to our local employers, and part of that talent is to be safe,” she said. “We offer multiple different types of trainings, but safety has always been a concerted effort. It’s really important that we reach every single employer to ensure that they get to go home at the end of the day.”
