MARQUETTE, Mich. (WZMQ) – Changes are on the way for Marquette’s voting precincts.
A new state law has allowed the number of registered voters per precinct to go from 3,000 to 5,000. In accordance with legislation the city has reduced the number of precincts from seven to four.
According to city officials the increase of absentee ballots and early voting has led to decreased numbers of in person ballots being placed. By consolidating precincts the city can save resources and money. The only physical change that voters will notice is the closure of 1 polling location.
“The only change on the ground is going to be previously precinct 4’s voting center, (which was the municipal service center), those voters will now likely be voting in the YMCA,” remarked City Clerk Kyle Whitney.
The changes are already in effect, voters have automatically been placed into their new precinct. The city will send out new voting registration cards with updated information in the coming weeks.
