ESCANABA, Mich. (WZMQ) – The City of Escanaba rang in the holiday season with an annual tree lighting ceremony.
The City Band and Esky Pops performed Christmas carols while Santa Claus himself took photos with attendees. Then, the crowd counted down to the lighting of the tree in the center of Downtown Escanaba, along with the garland hanging over Ludington Street.
Downtown Development Authority Director Craig Woerpel says each year, the tree lighting sets the tone for a festive season for both businesses and residents.
“Bringing people into the community square is a way of celebrating as a community to say that it’s going to be a good time, that we look forward to the holidays, and just get together and say hi to people, say hi to Santa,” said Woerpel. “We’re kicking off the Christmas season right here in Downtown Escanaba.”
The community enjoyed joining the Esky Pops for some carols, drinking hot cocoa, and visiting nearby businesses during the final hours of Black Friday on Tuesday.
