MARQUETTE, Mich. (WZMQ) – A Marquette-based biking charity is aiming to raise money not in the mountains but with table tennis. Hosted by Marquette Mountain, this Saturday, October 28th starting at 11 a.m. is the UP Open Invitational Ping Pong Tournament. It’s for the charity Start the Cycle, a group cycling program in Marquette County that introduces youth to a life full of success through winter and summer biking.
The Mountains Lodge will be sporting five breweries, two dispensaries, and even a live band “The Maynards” for the 32 players participating in the tournament. All the money raised by the tournament will also be matched by the Mountains Non-Profit JX Gives Back.
1st Place wins $2,000, 2nd Place wins $750 and 3rd Place wins $250.
“The last time that we did this it went off like gangbusters it was fun everybody had a blast but we didn’t raise that much money we only raised about $1000 dollars and it wasn’t matched by anybody. It’s representing the community in a way that has all the businesses throughout town, 32 different businesses sponsoring each of the players so there’s some comradery there and some competition,” commented Tournament Coordinator Brandon Sayen.
Registration is full for this event, but the Mountain Lodge is still open for public viewing.
