MARQUETTE, Mich. (WZMQ) – Northern Michigan University Athletics is hoping to breed some success heading into their full swing of Hockey season. At Tuesday’s Athletic press conference, Head Hockey Coach Grant Potulny reflected on the split series with Duluth with the 5-all tie Friday evening and a 5-8 loss on Saturday.
NMU’s Berry Events Center has also finalized the reconstruction of the ice sheet, shrinking its overall size by six feet and giving players a hybrid in between an NHL and an Olympic-sized rink. The rink has new glass panels installed as well, leaving coaches more comfortable with player safety and overall maneuverability on the rink. Safety on the rink is paramount to continue a healthy season, and before the new glass boards were installed, coaches commented that there was more potential for player injury.
“New glass new boards it’s the glass the NHL uses you know the glass we had before when you get hit into it it didn’t have any wiggle room for it so there’s the potential for more upper body injuries head injuries, this glass has give in it,” commented Potulny.
Heading into this weekend, NMU will be on the road to take on Arizona State and although it’s warmer weather coaches say the team is prepared for the business trip to bring a wildcat win home.
