MARQUETTE, Mich. (WZMQ) – Northern Michigan University’s Athletic Department was announcing the newest inductees to the NMU Sports Hall of Fame on Friday, September 15th.
The NMU Athletic Director commented that these ceremonies give athletes who might have left the UP a warm welcome back in the wildcat den.
“It brings them back to campus and sometimes kids leave they’ve given their life for four years and they never get to reconnect I think when you recognize success it spreads good will it just reinforces why we have an athletic program,” commented NMU Athletic Director Rick Comley
The ceremony was held at the Northern Center in Marquette recognizing the following athletes and coaches.
Inductees are as listed:
Dean Antos, who played Hockey for the Class of 1991. Antos played in 162 games for the Wildcats, tallying 75 goals, 95 assists, 170 points, and 33 power-play goals. Antos was captain of Northern’s National Championship team in 1991.
Kameron Burmeister was a Cross Country and Track and Field Athlete for the class of 2018. Burmeister was a four-year letter winner from 2014-18. A dominant performer in her first year, won five of the team’s six cross-country events and was named team MVP. Burmeister became Northern’s first cross-country All-American since 2005 when she earned that honor in 2016.
Jovan Dewitt played Football for the Wildcats and graduated with the class of 1999. Dewitt was a linebacker for the Wildcats from 1993-96. He was named the team’s Most Valuable Linebacker in 1995 and 1996 and was a Dr. C.M. Frank Honorable Mention All-American in 1995.
Robert Fehrs was the Men’s Wrestling Head Coach from 1975-1978. During his tenure at Northern, Fehrs owned a 36-8 overall record and coached 22 All-Americans, including two Division I All-Americans and two Division II National Champions, and recruited several wrestlers who are now in the NMU Sports Hall of Fame.
Halvor Maartmann was on the Men’s Nordic Ski team and graduated in the Class of 1977. Halvor Maartmann was a member of Northern’s 1975-76-77 Nordic ski teams. He was a three-time All-American, finishing second overall at the NCAA Championships in 1976.
