In early 2020, the Gwinn football program was struck with tragedy when beloved head coach Dion Brown unexpectedly passed away.
In the following two seasons, the program had two head coaches as they were looking for long term stability. They then tabbed Derek Nyquist to take over the job in 2022. Nyquist played quarterback for the Modeltowners from 2005-2008 and spent time with the Michigan Tech football program.
In his first season, Gwinn went 1-8 with the lone win coming on a forfeit. But everyone kept their heads down and kept working. Last Thursday, Nyquist and the Modeltowners got their first on-field victory beating West Iron County 32-6, a performance Nyquist attributes to the belief in the work over time.
Gwinn hits the road tomorrow night in a West Pac Iron clash with the Manistique Emeralds, where the Modeltowners plan to continue to keep their heads down and go to work.
