Yoga With Kittens raises funds for Delta Animal Shelter

ESCANABA, Mich. (WZMQ) – Thursday evening, the Delta Animal Shelter hosted a yoga class with a furry twist.

Instructor Ilana Minor led Yoga With Kittens. Attendees got their workout in while kittens ran loose and played with toys.

Shelter Operations Coordinator Vonnie Bruce says while yoga is beneficial for humans, the session isn’t just healthy for them. She says the session helps to prepare kittens for the day they find their forever homes.

“Getting those kittens some socialization is wonderful,” said Bruce. “Having them out running around with other kittens and with people really helps to get them used to being around people so that when they are ready for adoption, they are more comfortable transitioning to a home environment.”

The kittens at Thursday’s session will undergo spaying and neutering procedures before becoming available for adoption. The shelter currently has a large number of kittens awaiting their procedures.

“That’s something we’ve been doing, along with shelters and veterinary clinics across the country,” said Bruce. “Things are really backed up.”

Bruce hopes inviting the community to events like Yoga With Kittens encourages them to become more involved with the shelter.

“A lot of people have never been to an animal shelter before,” she said. “There’s a lot of misconceptions and things that people may think about a shelter or a humane society before they come in, and we can show them it’s not a scary place. It’s really inviting and welcoming, and we want people to visit us as much as they can.”

All procedes from Yoga With Kittens will be used to fund operations at the Delta Animal Shelter.

Thursday’s session was possibly the last Yoga With Kittens of the year, but you can follow the Delta Animal Shelter on Facebook for updates on future events and fundraisers. Click here to learn more about instructor Ilana Minor.
