MARQUETTE, Mich. (WZMQ) – First Responders gathered on the campus of NMU today to have a discussion about mental health and wellness.
Beyond the Scene, Surviving to Thriving is a 2 day conference put on by the Michigan Rural EMS Service. The organization specializes in strengthening rural ems systems by providing resources and training for first responders.
The conference has brought in speakers from around the country to give first responders skills and resources relating to mental health. One speaker, a nationally renowned artist and retired paramedic, Daniel Sundahl, is recognized around the country for his work in mental health services.
“I think if we can bring awareness to what’s happening, then you’re able to process it , and recover from it, instead of sweeping it under the rug and pretend it’s not there, which is kind of the norm for emergency workers to do,” remarked Sundahl.
Attendees of the conference received Michigan Commission of Law Enforcement Standards training hours.
