MARQUETTE, Mich. (WZMQ) – The South Shore Fishing Association is looking for more volunteers for its Veterans Fishing Day this Saturday. Every year the association gives veterans a chance to get out on the lake and enjoy a day of fishing. The whole event is run by volunteers who donate their boats and their time for the day to help the veterans fish, and cook up the catches for lunch afterwards.
South shore is looking for some community supporters to come down to the lower harbor to socialize and welcome the veterans back. The Associations Treasured, Pamela Basal says they could use volunteers on the boats as well, but she’s hoping to see a lot of folks on Saturday who are there just to support the veterans.
“It’s a healing process for them.” Basal said. “Having that welcome home from our community is amazing for them… Some of them didn’t get it before, so it’s a great part for the community to show the veterans exactly what they mean to them.”
