Safely disposing of fireworks while celebrating the 4th of July

MARQUETTE, Mich. (WZMQ) – 4th of July celebrations are just days away and that includes parades, a laser light show, and of course, the fireworks. Fireworks may be a fun way to celebrate, but all it takes is a small spark to light a fire.

Marquette Fire Department said when disposing of fireworks like firecrackers, mortars, and bottle rockets, fill a 5-gallon bucket full of water, and soak them until the embers have fully gone out.

“After the fireworks go off and if you don’t completely soak them it can cause a secondary fire if you’re gonna light off fireworks, do it sober, follow our city ordinances don’t cause a nuisance to people, and have fun,” commented Marquette City Fire Marshall Jeff Fossitt.

A reminder to anyone who does light off fireworks, they are not permitted on streets, sidewalks, churches, or any other public space, and anyone who breaks this law will be charged with a state civil infraction and receive up to a $500 fine.
