MARQUETTE, Mich. (WZMQ) – Two Marquette elementary schools are getting some new greenery thanks to a local girl scout troop. Troop 5021 worked with the Marquette Rotary Club and The Superior Watershed Partnership to plant native trees and pollinator gardens.
10 trees and 38 flowers for the gardens were planted at both Superior Hills and Sandy Knoll Elementary Schools in Marquette. The Superior Watershed Partnership gave some expertise to the girls about the native tree and plant selection, planting demonstrations, and environmental education. Rotary board member, Sally Davis, says its always fun working with The Girl Scouts and introducing them to new things.
“One of the girl scouts that’s here today said that this is the first time that she’s ever planted anything” Davis says, “so the opportunity to teach them how to plant and how to help the earth is really a wonderful thing.”
The troop is focusing gaining hands on experience and skills that help sustain the environment. Cecelia Campana is a 4th grader at Sandy Knoll and a Junior in her Troop, she says her and her friends are excited to be able to watch the trees they planted grow at their school.
“I’m very happy that they’re gonna be there because we love butterflies and stuff, me and my friends.” Cecelia explained, “We just really want them to come, so this really helps a lot with it.”
The Rotary says they want to empower girls to give back to the earth, the planting is a part of a Rotary initiative to plant more trees in the Marquette area.
