ESCANABA, Mich. (WZMQ) – The Billerud paper mill in Escanaba resumed operations on May 8, after being idled since April 13.
The company says it has reopened following a deep cleaning, which was recommended by public health authorities and experts. They also said no Blastomyces spores have been found within the mill.
As of May 5, there were 115 cases of blastomycosis in employees, contractors, or visitors of the mill. Fourteen of those cases were hospitalized.
Billerud will continue to work with local, state, and federal health officials as they continue to investigate the situation.
