NEGAUNEE, Mich. (WZMQ) – On Wednesday, Marquette County declared a local state of emergency due to the flood damage causing poor road conditions, creating limited accessibility through Republic, Negaunee, Chocolay, and several other areas of the county. “Gwinn area and Forsyth township there’s been some debris deposited that the township will have to clean up and certainly been some homeowners that have had some minor flooding in their basement,” said Marquette County Emergency Manager Brian Hummel.
Officials noted the primary concern is on the Michigamme River system based on significant flooding in Republic Township (Republic Township residence pictured below). “Michigamme River level is down slightly from where it was a couple of days ago so I think it’s built some capacity to handle the additional rainfall that we’re experiencing today but we’ll be watching that closely,” continued Hummel.
