MARQUETTE, Mich. (WZMQ) – Four up and coming punk bands are performing at Northern Michigan University this weekend to support The Marquette Women’s Center. The Northern Michigan Artist Discovery group (NoMAD) is working with The Women’s Center for sexual assault awareness month.
The concert features femme punk bands and encourages empowerment, knowledge accessibility, and awareness for the women’s center. NoMAD Co-President, Sarah Gimpl has helped organize the concert and says she’s excited to see people come out and support the bands for a good cause.
“It’s called RA RA rock for your rights” Says Gimpl, “So kind of encouraging an empowerment theme here, especially because its sexual assault awareness month in April, so that’s kind of why we wanted to tie in The Women’s Center to be able to give resources to college kids and the community.”
All the proceeds from this event go to The Marquette Women’s Center to fund its resources and outreach. The women’s center works to provide programs and services in Marquette and Alger counties that protect, educate, advocate, and counsel survivors of abuse. NoMAD Board Member Thomas Chicka said the group had a great time planning this weekends show.
“We decided it would be a great partnership to work with the women’s center for this show” Chicka said, “and be able to not only use this as a platform for them to spread their message to the community but also to have it be a fundraiser for them.”
The RA RA Rock For Your Rights concert is Saturday, April 8th starting at 6 pm in The Northern Center ballrooms. Admission is $10 or free with a student ID. Donations for The Women’s Center will be accepted at the event as well, with posters for those who donate.
