NEGAUNEE, Mich. (WZMQ) – A $2.1 Million dollar redevelopment project in Negaunee is one step closer to becoming reality after a Negaunee Downtown Development Authority meeting Monday night.
The DDA voted to approve a downtown enhancement project. The project will include adding new parks and have a focus on making Negaunee more walkable.
The project also will update infrastructure such as sewer and water mains and repaving roads. The city also plans to add fiber cables to downtown which will provide free wifi to those in downtown Negaunee.
“It’s a major improvement to the downtown corridor, attracting businesses with this huge public investment, you are gonna see it followed by private investment down the road,” said Negaunee city manager Nate Heffron.
Negaunee received $885,000 dollars from a state grant that will go towards the redevelopment.
Before work can be started the project still has to be approved by the Negaunee planning commission then the city commission.
