BARAGA, Mich. (WZMQ) – Returning for the fourth time, Keweenaw Bay Ice Melt is underway. With warmer conditions than the last three contests, ice formation finally met the specifications and was placed on February 17th.
Contest participants are guessing the exact time and date the drum will break through the ice. The winning guess will be the closest guess down to the minute.
Providing a little bit of his strategy, Baraga Chamber Treasurer Nathan Grave said, “In 2020, it went in March 20th. 2021, it went on March 2nd, but last year it took all the way til April 4th. So, we will see where it’s going to be, but I’ve got my own guess, I won’t share it, but I have my own guess to when it may be going in.”
Conveniently placing the drum just off US-41 near the Baraga State Park enables anyone passing by a clear view from the comfort of your vehicle.
Ticket sales will end on March 20, 2023. Tickets can be purchased at Indian Country Sports, Hardwood
Steakhouse, Skippers Bar & Grill, Northern Oil, L’Anse American Legion Post 144, Bella Vista, Woodland
Firearms, Wilkinson’s General Store, and the Chamber office, or enter online through the Chamber
