U.P. universities highlight safety protocols and procedures following MSU shooting

UPPER PENINSULA, Mich. (WZMQ) – In light of the recent shooting at Michigan State University, Northern Michigan University and Michigan Tech University are informing students of protocols to keep campus safe.

A common procedure are the automated alerts sent to students, faculty and staff by text or email. These notification systems send out updates of any current or ongoing situation to those on campus and in the community.

“Everyone on our campus is loaded into our text alert system and anyone else can sign up for those alerts at that website,” said Northern Michigan University’s Marketing Director Derek Hall.

Following what public safety has told the university, staff and faculty send out the information to the student body.

MTU and NMU have recommended that students should go to their websites to find more on their emergency protocols.

“One thing that we always encourage is just mentally preparing yourself as much as possible for those situations and kind of having a plan beforehand,” said Reid Devoge, the MTU Deputy Chief Public Safety Officer.

As a further measure of safety training, staff have ongoing practices throughout campus. The faculty works with the local law enforcement, walking through the departments and discussing a room’s dangers and how to respond safely.

“We definitely work with all the local law enforcement agencies and first responders on providing training to the police and first responders,” continued Devoge.

Michigan Tech has a number of ways to report any incidents first by calling 911. The campus public safety line and/or reporting to the anonymus tip line are also options for students in such a situation.

“In the event that something does happen the University will make it’s best effort to provide continuous and ongoing updates so that again the campus community can make the best decision possible given the situation,” said Devoge.

Each university plans to continue its training of faculty and staff for various threats, keeping families and students as safe as possible.
