MARQUETTE, Mich (WZMQ) – The Meijer State Games of Michigan had a filled schedule of winter sports for the community to watch and compete in throughout the weekend of February 10th.
Marquette Mountain held all the ski and snowboard events that began with the Rail Jam on Friday, following the opening ceremony and closing out on Sunday with Giant Slalom.
Executive Director of the Meijer State Games Eric Engelbarts said this unique competition brings the whole community together. “It was absolutely phenomenal. It was awesome we had the parade of athletes, the lighting of the cauldron, fireworks going off and it was just absolutely amazing”, commented Engelbarts.
The Meijer State Games’ “everyone is welcome and everyone plays” motto has stretched miles, bringing in athletes of all levels from beginners to even competitors with Olympic medals.
“The community has come out in droves. Whether it’s the business community and sponsorships to those individuals that wanted to volunteer to come out and help us get up and set up and run the actual event to the athletes coming out and participating, Marquette has been an awesome host of the winter games this year”, said Engelbarts.
The Meijer State Games winter sports competitions will continue downstate in Frederic Township with Cross Country Skiing Freestyle on Saturday, February 18th, followed by Nordic Style on Sunday, February 19th.
