MARQUETTE, Mich (WZMQ) – Following the past few days of shopping, Giving Tuesday spans across the nation and continues to spread generosity. In the Upper Peninsula, this event presents a lot of opportunities for both local and state-wide organizations to lend a hand. “I think that the word has just kind of gotten out about giving Tuesday”, said Outreach Coordinator Taylor Brutto.

Officials from Grow and Lead said that over 50 programs have registered for the event. This includes the Marquette Alternative High School continuing its “Rock the Socks” event with Wattson and Wattson Jewelers, and many more organizations and non-profits to help.

Rock the Socks

Organizations that are taking part in this year’s “Rock the Socks” event are as follows:

  • Sandy Knoll Elementary
  • MAPS Central Office
  • Bothwell Middle School
  • NMU Hockey 12/2 vs. MTU
  • Marquette Alternative High School
  • Negaunee High School
  • Cherry Creek Elementary
  • Marquette Senior High School
  • Graveraet Elementary
  • St. Louis The King Church
  • Mr. McGregors Garden
  • Superior Hills Elementary
  • Lofaro’s Fresh Market
  • Wattsson & Wattsson Jewelers
  • Embers Credit Union
  • Select Reality
  • Ishpeming high /Middle school
  • Profiles Hair Salon

Rock the Socks is an event that has been running for the better part of 10 years, helping to give warm socks to those in need. “You know how cold our winters are, everybody needs a good pair of socks or a few good pairs of socks”, said Brutto.

Marquette Symphony Orchestra is also participating in this year’s Giving Tuesday. Musicians will be offering a 30-minute performance to elderly residents of the Marquette community. For more information on the organizations taking part in this year’s Grow and Lead Giving Tuesday, click here.

Polling locations in Marquette officially closed at 8 pm, but if you were in line by then, you could still vote. "The polls, even though they closed at eight, we allowed those folks that were in line to vote. So it did finally finish up at about 20 after eight or so," said Talsma.
