MARQUETTE, Mich (WZMQ) – As firearm deer season begins, and harvests are being brought in for registration, there are still community members that don’t take part in the hunting holiday.
The Michigan DNR suggests the MI-HUNT website for those looking to enjoy the snowy weather safely. This is a great resource for people to find hunting grounds and trail locations in the area. With a large number of public hiking trails in the U.P., a lot of them actually run through active hunting grounds.
Deputy Public Information Officer John Pepin says “you have to think of safety as your first priority just like anything else, and probably the best thing you can do is wear blaze orange even if you’re not a hunter. And if you don’t have blaze orange wear something really bright, like bright red. If you have pets with you like walking your dog or something, put a vest on your pet, something that is gonna make em stick out and be very visible to hunters”
The interactive map shows users the area of the U.P., in more detail. Hikers can find hunting grounds and accurate trail locations safe for exploration. The map has filters to help users find the recreational activity that fits them. You can find hunting lands that are open to the public, hiking trails to explore, and even recreational facilities listed on the map.
