WASHINGTON, D.C. – Outside of the Supreme Court, abortion protests continued. Many people staged a “sit in” in the middle of the street, which resulted in nearly 200 people getting arrested.
“We won’t go back, we won’t go back,” chanted the protesters.
Abortion rights activists marched towards the Supreme Court and the Capitol. They sat down in a nearby intersection. They tell us they were performing ‘civil disobedience’ following the Supreme Court ruling striking down Roe v. Wade, which legalized abortions across the U.S. Our crew spoke with a couple of protesters and they said they hope the recent ruling on Roe will energize people to vote in the upcoming elections.
“Personally I think abortions should be legal,” said abortion rights protester Marley Yakim. “I don’t think it should be left up to the states or federal government or anything. I think it’s a personal decision for the person.“
“People need to stay engaged,” said abortion rights protester Lora Nunn. “I think a lot of people don’t pay attention because they think this could happen and it just did. I think people need to stay on top of what’s going on in their district and in the country.”
Capitol Police said they gave the group three warnings before they started arresting them for blocking traffic. A total of 181 people were arrested.
