MARQUETTE, Mich. (WZMQ) – The Lake Superior Theatre in Marquette has a new production hitting the stage tomorrow night.
“The Prom”, an award winning Broadway musical comedy is kicking off a two week run at the Lake Superior Theatre, located on the lakefront, adjacent to Mattson Lower Harbor Park. I sat down with one of the stars of the show, Tony Beacco, for an inside look at this new production.
“Four Broadway actors who really get a bad review on their musical they’re doing called “Eleanor” and the New York Times just crucifies them in their review so they decide to find a cause in the country to take on to deflect this bad review to get them some good press.” Said Beacco. “So, they find out about this situation in a small town in Indiana, where a girl is not allowed to go to the prom with her girlfriend so they are going to settle that injustice.”
“The Prom” draws heavily on real life events for it’s inspiration, and has been nominated for six Tony Awards including Best Musical in 2019. It has also been turned into a book and movie.
“It was originally a Broadway show but then it was a movie with Meryl Streep in it on Netflix.” Said Beacco.
The theme is basically a fish out of water story with a timely and serious topic wrapped up in song and laughter. The 27 member cast takes us on a journey of high school romance, inclusion, and acceptance with all the charm of a classic musical comedy. Beacco believes “The Prom” will make us laugh and cry, all while making us think about truly important societal issues.
“It’s a very entertaining fun show. The audience will laugh a lot and then all of a sudden there’s some really serious moments that makes it very inspirational as well.” Said Beacco.
The Prom will play Tuesday through Friday this week and next, with a matinee performance Sunday the 11th. For more information and to purchase tickets you can visit lakesuperiortheatre.com
