WASHINGTON, D.C. — Democrats will officially take control of the United States Congress in 2027 following sweeping Election Day victories across the country.
From tight races to wide-margin victories, Democrats are riding high on what’s being called a “blue tsunami.”
From Texas– “This win is for every Texan who’s ever wondered if anyone is listening. I heard you, we heard you, and tonight the world hears you,” said Texas Sen.-elect James Talarico, D-Texas.
To Maine– “We did it. Working people did it,” said Maine Sen.-elect Troy Jackson, D-Maine.
And even South Carolina– “I think we just made some history,” said South Carolina Sen.-elect Annie Andrews, D-S.C.
Democrats made history up and down the ballot on Tuesday.
“Oh, what a night,” said Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., on Wednesday.
Democrats flipped seven Republican U.S. Senate seats, with two seats still too close to call.
Schumer, who told reporters he would return as Senate Majority Leader come January, called the result a “generational remake of the U.S. Senate map that is going to change America not only now but into the future.”
“Five words for the American people: relief is on the way,” Schumer added.
Democrats also maintained control of crucial seats, including Michigan — where Abdul El-Sayed will keep the seat of retiring Sen. Gary Peters, D-Mich., blue.
El-Sayed defeated Republican Mike Rogers in a contentious midterm race and will become the first Muslim ever elected to the U.S. Senate.
“Michigan. We did it,” said El-Sayed. “I am so proud and honored to stand here as your senator-elect from the great state of Michigan.”
In the early hours of Wednesday morning at El-Sayed’s watch party in Detroit, supporters called the results: “Beyond what I had imagined,” said Haley Pepper, an El-Sayed supporter from Ann Arbor, Michigan.
Pepper believes the massive blue wave that carried her candidate and several others to victory is a direct response to the discomfort and dissatisfaction felt across the country.
“I’m a Michigander, lifelong Michigander, and people are struggling and everybody wants change. They want people who are actually going to pay attention to their life, their quality of life,” said Pepper.
In some of his first public comments following the GOP’s stunning defeat, President Trump said he has no regrets.
“I mean, if I were on the ballot, we would have won,” said President Trump. “There was such a love at those rallies, it was incredible. We weren’t able to transfer the love to candidates,” Trump added when asked about his midterm rally campaign approach.
As of now, Senate races in Alaska and Mississippi are still too close to call.
Democrats also won control of the U.S. House, which means they will control the entire legislative branch of the U.S. government starting in 2027.
