Democrats Could Launch Oversight Investigations in Next Congress, Leaders said they will also Focus on Affordability

WASHINGTON, D.C. – With Democrats slated to take control of both chambers, we could expect to see a lot more oversight into the Trump administration. With the change in control, it means the Democrats will have full investigatory powers of Congress. They can hold public hearings, issue subpoenas, and monitor how agencies and officials execute laws and policies.

Some Democrats have shared they’re interested in focusing on the administration’s handling of the Jeffrey Epstein files. Members could investigate ties between the late convicted sex offender and other powerful figures.

We could also expect hearings looking into alleged misconduct by immigration and federal law enforcement agents.

Other democrats have shared concerns into what they see as corruption, particularly looking into officials trying to financially help the interests of the president, his family and his allies.

Rep. Robert Garcia (D- CA), the current ranking member of the House Oversight Committee, and presumed chairman in the next congress, shared online: “Lawyer up”.

House and Senate Democratic leaders said their main focus will not just be on oversight but other issues that directly impact Americans, like affordability.

“Look, there has to be, there was such rampant corruption, there has to be some investigations, but we’re not going to take our eye off the ball,” said Sen. Chuck Schumer (D- NY). “Number one, reducing costs, ending corruption.”

“I haven’t had a single member of the House Democratic Caucus talk to me about impeachment,” said Rep. Hakeem Jeffries (D- NY). “We’ve been relentlessly focused on affordability and on accountability.”
