MARQUETTE, Mich. (WZMQ) – On Thursday, 109th District Representative Karl Bohnak made a stop at WZMQ 19 to discuss healthcare in the Upper Peninsula, joined by 102nd District Representative and Chairman of the House Health Policy Committee, Curt VanderWall.
Following major cuts made in 2025 to rural healthcare access in the U.P., Bohnak discussed his vote on the renewal of Michigan’s Interstate Physicians Compact. This allows medical staff to cross state-lines to provide care for Yoopers.
Bohnak also discussed ideas to offer more healthcare careers in the Upper Peninsula, to service areas of less coverage.
“We need well paying jobs to keep families up here,” he said. “When you have the population, then we’re going to have the services to support that population. It’s all around that, and it’s all tied to the energy situation.”
“We want to make sure we have more people coming in that are available to provide those services,” said VanderWall. “So, I give Karl a lot of kudos for making sure that he brings that up to us in committee.”
Bohnak fights for re-election against Democrat Anna Aho Rink this coming Tuesday.
