NEGAUNEE TWP, Mich. (WZMQ) – The UP200 Dryland Dash is back on Saturday, October 10.
Aside from a similar race happening in Alaska, Negaunee Township usually hosts the first of many of the sprint races for the midwestern dryland mushing season. During the peak color season, over 50 participating teams will also have every second to experience the beauty of the Upper Peninsula woods.
“We’re essentially the season opener for fall dryland racing, currently we have teams from as far as Missouri and Georgia coming in,” said Registration Volunteer, Jana Roberts.
The sprint races are fast-paced and stay moving throughout the afternoon. Starting at 9 a.m., racers of all ages will compete in each class and team size back-to-back. Organizers say spectators can show up at any time and see just as much of the races.
“It’s more spectator friendly in the sense that it’s not -15 degrees outside like the UP200,” said Trail Boss, Kate Dehlin. “It’s brief, not two hours out in the snow.”
While celebrating ten years of the event, a Fun Run will be incorporated after Saturday’s final event. For $5, new mushers or anyone with a dog willing to hit the trail can take their shot for on the one mile track.
“It’s a great way to celebrate with us, and all the funds go back into the UP200 Dryland Dash fund for next year,” said Roberts.
If not participating, spectators are reminded to leave their pets at home. Three musher scholarships will also be announced on Monday, October 5. Those details and more can be found here.
