MARQUETTE, Mich. (WZMQ) – Several Marquette community members visited the Lakeview Arena citizen’s forum room Wednesday evening, to hear directly from candidates looking to fill three seats on the Marquette City Commission. A full list of those candidates can be found here.
All seven candidates were invited to the League of Women Voters of Marquette County forum, and six made an appearance. Those included the following:
Mark Curran, president of apartment construction group Curran and Company, carrying his experience to try and work towards boosting housing and tourism opportunities.
Paul Schloegel, the current mayor of Marquette after previously served on multiple city boards, looking to hold a seat on the Marquette City Commission.
Marcella Krupski, with over 15 years in business ownership and hospitality, previously serving as a staff member for Senator Bart Stupak. She looks at prioritizing affordability and transportation.
Ross W. Johnson, a general manager of Double Trouble Entertainment and former Finish Carpenter for the City of Marquette, is gearing around tourism and the city’s public works.
Kevin A. Clegg, serving for four years and as the current chair of the Marquette City Planning Commission, he’s pushing for a tourism tax and decreasing building costs.
Margaret Brumm, a Marquette native with experience working with staff and community members to improve areas in and around the city.
Seventh candidate, Matthew Luttenburger was not in attendance.
The LWV say this type of event brings a fair face of these candidates to the public.
“We don’t encourage debate, they’re answering questions that the audience asked, and we have each candidate answer each question,” said Jo Foley, Convener for the League of Women Voters of Marquette County. “It was great, we got to hear from all of them.”
The LWVMC also says the vast backgrounds of these candidates create an engaging amount of unique ideas for the future of Marquette.
“It’s a really interesting mix of posibilities, and they’ll bring all of that experience to the board,” said Foley.
