MARQUETTE, Mich. (WZMQ) – Amid a police investigation into a suspicious device, an area of Rock Street in Marquette is temporarily closed.
Around 11:45 a.m. on September 18, the Marquette Police Department responded to a 911 open line, where an altercation could be heard happening on Rock Street. Officers initiated an investigation and learned that an assault had occurred. The suspect had been in possession of a device that was reported to be a pipe bomb.
The device was located outside of the residence, and the area was blocked off. The Michigan State Police Bomb Squad responded from Grayling to assess the device. At the time of this post, a portion of the 500 block of Rock Street is closed to vehicle and pedestrian traffic. The Marquette Police Department advises people to remain clear of the area. There was no recommendation to have homes in the area evacuated.
The suspect has been arrested and lodged at the Marquette County Jail on a misdemeanor assault charge, punishable by 93 days of incarceration, and a five-year felony charge of sending an explosive with intent to frighten. The individual’s name will not be released until arraignment.
